Grades matter. Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it leaves the yard. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — they may have a patched repair, a soft floor patch or a door seal that no longer seats, and we will point out exactly what is wrong with one before you buy it. New single-trip units are sealed and unmarked. If a container has to keep rain off what is inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.
Worth knowing before you ask why it costs more than a 20ft: they do not come off the ship at this length. A 10ft is cut down from a larger unit and the end rebuilt, so you are paying for a fabricator's time rather than for steel. If the block will take a 20ft, that is the better buy every time.

Old Grafton is full of deep narrow blocks with a house set close to one boundary and a lane or a shared drive down the side. A 20ft will not turn into most of them and a crane lift over the roof costs more than the container. A 10ft on a tilt-tray usually will, and that is the entire reason people here buy the expensive small one.
The other regular buyer is the coastal strata block — Yamba, Sawtell, the Coffs beachside units. Body corporate ground, a shared parking area and a set-down spot that has to not block anyone. A 10ft fits inside a couple of parking bays and can be picked up and moved later without a second thought.
For a farm or a business with room, ignore all of this and buy the 20ft. The price difference makes no sense until the physical constraint is real, and on any block where both will fit, it is the wrong purchase.
Because 10ft containers are not manufactured for shipping in any volume. Nearly every one in the country is a 20ft or 40ft that has been cut down and had a new end wall fabricated and sealed. You are paying for the cutting, the welding and the certification, not for the steel. If a 20ft will physically fit, buy the 20ft.
Usually, and this is exactly what people buy them for. A tilt-tray still wants a straight approach and something firm to reverse over, but the short body makes the swing into a tight drive far more achievable. No. Sixteen cubic metres is roughly a large single garage's worth. It handles a one-bedroom flat, a workshop's tools, or the contents of a shed. A three-bedroom house being emptied for a renovation is a 20ft at minimum and often a 40ft.
