Check the grade before the price. Grade decides whether a container keeps the rain out. Cargo-worthy units are checked wind and watertight at the yard before they are loaded. As-is stock is the cheap end and is not sold watertight: expect a patched panel, a soft spot in the floor or a door seal that has stopped seating, and expect us to show you the fault rather than leave you to find it. New single-trip units arrive sealed and unmarked. For anything that has to stay dry, buy cargo-worthy or new.
Yes, the small one is dearer than the 20ft. Shipping lines do not run 10ft boxes, so each one starts life as a longer container that a fabricator cuts, closes with a new end wall, seals and repaints. You are paying for that labour. If a 20ft fits, buy the 20ft.

You do not have to buy this off a photograph. The yard is at 1a Reid St, South Grafton, and you are welcome to walk around the stock. Ring first: it is a working yard, stock turns over, and a 10ft is not always standing in the row. Even then, a tape measure against a 20ft soon shows whether your space really is too short for one.
With a cut-down container, inspect the end that was rebuilt. Follow the weld seam around the new end wall and check it is continuous, sealed and painted rather than tacked and left. Then swing both doors, work the locking bars, stand inside with the doors shut looking for daylight, and walk the floor feeling for soft patches.
In town it is a space problem. The older streets of Grafton and South Grafton have long, narrow blocks where the only way in is a side drive beside the house. A 10ft on a tilt-tray can usually be backed down it, where a longer unit cannot make the turn. At unit blocks in Yamba and Sawtell it has to fit a parking bay or two without boxing in the neighbours.
On farms it is a location problem. A cane grower on the lower Clarence around Maclean needs somewhere lockable for fittings, hoses and hand tools at the far end of the farm, not sixty cubic metres beside the pump. Macadamia growers use them the same way, for harvest gear kept next to the block. Spray chemical is a different matter and belongs in a dangerous goods unit.
No container keeps floodwater out. A cargo-worthy unit sheds rain from above, but floodwater rises to the door seals and gets in, and an empty box can float off its blocks.
A 10ft can be moved by one ordinary truck, but only with early notice and an open road. Do not plan around it. There is more in containers and flood risk on the Clarence, and the delivery page covers what the truck needs.
From Iluka and Yamba down to Woolgoolga and Sawtell the air carries salt, and salt goes looking for bare steel. On a cut-down container the obvious place is the fabricated end.
For a coastal block, buy cargo-worthy or new single-trip and touch up any scrape as soon as you see it. An as-is 10ft is cheaper, but it is not sold watertight, and sea air works on an existing fault faster than on sound paint. Inland, at Coutts Crossing or Glenreagh, an as-is unit holding fencing gear that does not mind a drip is a reasonable buy.

Internally it is 2.83m long by 2.35m wide, about 6.6 square metres, with 2.39m of height and a door opening 2.28m high. That takes a ride-on mower and the garden gear, or a tradesman's tools and stock. A house-lot needs a 20ft or bigger.
Watertight depends on the grade, not the length. Cargo-worthy 10fts are checked wind and watertight before they leave the yard, rebuilt end included. New units are sealed. As-is units cost less because they are not sold as watertight. We do not publish a 10ft hire rate because availability moves around, so ring for what is on hand.
