Twice the length for nowhere near twice the price. It is what the farms on the river flats buy, what the bigger workshops on the Coffs industrial estates end up with, and what almost everybody storing at scale wishes they had bought first.

Grades matter. Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it leaves the yard. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — they may have a patched repair, a soft floor patch or a door seal that no longer seats, and we will point out exactly what is wrong with one before you buy it. New single-trip units are sealed and unmarked. If a container has to keep rain off what is inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.
A 40ft arrives on a sidelifter, which sets it down beside the truck on hydraulic legs. Allow roughly thirty metres of clear working room and ground firm enough to take those legs without them sinking. On silt or sand, that second part is the whole conversation — read the delivery page before you pick the spot.

Cubic metres are the easy part of buying a 40ft. The hard part is that a sidelifter puts a very large load through four small pads, and both of this district's common surfaces let go under that. River-flat silt around Ulmarra, Lawrence and the Grafton flats holds water below the surface long after the top looks dry. Coastal sand from Woolgoolga through to Sawtell looks solid and simply is not, once the pad concentrates the weight.
The practical answer is timing and preparation rather than avoidance. We deliver 40fts through both sorts of country constantly. It means picking a dry stretch where we can, putting timber or steel plate under the legs where we need to, and occasionally splitting the job into two 20fts when the block genuinely will not take the machine.
The other thing worth planning is the fixed footprint. Twelve metres does not get repositioned casually. Work out which way the doors face and where you will approach it from before the truck is booked, because turning a 40ft around afterwards is a second crane hire, not a favour.
Usually yes, unless there is a crane on site or you are unloading it yourself. A sidelifter wants around thirty metres of working room and firm level ground for the legs. If your access is tighter than that, a crane truck can sometimes place one over an obstacle, and two 20fts is often the cheaper answer.
A 40ft is nearly always cheaper than two 20fts for the same total volume — guide pricing starts from $2,600 used and $5,500 new, ex GST, against $2,200 and $3,300 each for a 20ft. Two 20fts win on flexibility, on tight sites and when you may want to move or sell one later.
Often, in dry conditions. What stops it is soft ground rather than width — a loaded sidelifter is heavy and the legs concentrate that load. On the river flats we would rather come in a dry week than get a truck bogged in your paddock, and we will say so when we quote.
It makes a good one, and if that is the plan buy the high cube version. Standard internal height is 2.39m, which is fine for storage and low for working under a light with anything overhead. The extra 300mm in a high cube is the difference between a store and a workspace.
