General Purpose Shipping Containers, Grafton & the Clarence Valley

A general purpose container is the plain steel box: corrugated walls, a plywood floor on steel cross-members, two cargo doors at one end and a lock box over the padlock. Inspect ours at 1a Reid St, South Grafton before you buy.

Check the grade before the price. Grade decides whether a container keeps the rain out. Cargo-worthy units are checked wind and watertight at the yard before they are loaded. As-is stock is the cheap end and is not sold watertight: expect a patched panel, a soft spot in the floor or a door seal that has stopped seating, and expect us to show you the fault rather than leave you to find it. New single-trip units arrive sealed and unmarked. For anything that has to stay dry, buy cargo-worthy or new.

Guide prices, ex GST. The delivered figure moves with your address, the grade and what is standing at South Grafton that week, so ring (02) 5616 9099 for an actual number rather than a range.

Walk around the stock at 1a Reid St first

General purpose units are most of what the South Grafton yard holds: cargo-worthy 20fts most of the time, 40fts through regularly, new single-trip units in and out, and as-is stock at the cheap end. Ring before you come so someone is there to open them up.

The useful part is the comparison. Put a cargo-worthy unit beside an as-is one and the price gap explains itself, and we will point out the fault on the as-is box before you ask. Work the locking bars, stand inside with the doors shut looking for daylight at the roof line, corners and seals, then walk the floor.

Matching the grade to where it will sit

Distance from the sea is the first thing we ask about. At Yamba, Iluka, Woolgoolga, Coffs Harbour and Sawtell the air is salty, and salt turns any chip or open bolt hole into rust far sooner than it would up the valley. There a cargo-worthy or new single-trip container earns its price, and touch-up paint is part of owning it.

Inland the sums change. Around Grafton and Junction Hill a cargo-worthy used unit will look rough and last for years. An as-is unit is cheaper again, but it is not sold watertight, so it only suits contents that do not mind a drip: star pickets, poly pipe, tyres.

What they get filled with around the Clarence

Cane farms on the lower river use them as the lockable shed a low paddock cannot otherwise have, for tools, irrigation fittings and spare parts. Macadamia growers keep harvest gear in them between seasons. Trades hold stock on site, and households fill them with furniture while a renovation runs over.

If someone will stand up and work in it, look at the high cube, and if it will hold spray chemical or fuel, that is a dangerous goods unit.

When the river comes up

A container does not keep floodwater out, and we will not sell you one on the idea that it does. Cargo-worthy means sealed against rain from above. Floodwater reaches the door seals and gets in, and an empty container can float.

What it gives you on the flats is lockable storage on blocks above the ground, on the highest firm spot you have, which a truck can take to higher ground ahead of a rise if it still has a way in. The delivery page covers what each vehicle needs, and there is more in containers and flood risk on the Clarence.

General Purpose — common questions

Can I inspect a general purpose container before I buy it?

Yes, and we would rather you did. Ring (02) 5616 9099 first so someone is at 1a Reid St to open the units up. Too far to drive in? We can photograph that container, serial number showing, and send the pictures before delivery. Collection from the yard is by arrangement; otherwise cartage is quoted with the container.

Is a general purpose container watertight?

In cargo-worthy grade, yes: each one is checked wind and watertight before it leaves the yard. New single-trip units are sealed. As-is units are priced lower and are not sold as watertight. None of that covers floodwater, which comes in at the door seals on any container.

Which size do most people around Grafton buy?

The 20ft. It holds a house of furniture or a trade's whole kit and it arrives on a standard tilt-tray. Farms and larger workshops go to a 40ft where the ground suits a sidelifter. A 10ft only makes sense where nothing longer will fit.

Do containers come with a lock box?

Our general purpose units are fitted with one. It is a steel shroud welded over the padlock so bolt cutters cannot get a bite on the shackle. On a container sitting on an unattended site or an out-of-town block, it is the single most useful thing on the door.
