What we put on the truck for South Grafton is mostly for lockable storage for the transport, engineering and workshop businesses through the industrial pocket off Through Street and Induna Street, machinery and parts storage on the properties out along Big River Way, and household storage on the residential streets running back from the highway. The yard holds a spread of grades side by side, which makes the choice easy to see: patched and cheap at one end, sound and checked in the middle, new at the other.

South Grafton is the easiest side of the river to get a truck into and it is not close. The industrial area is laid out for heavy vehicles — wide entries, hardstand, room to line up — and the highway approach means a driver never has to take a loaded truck through the centre of Grafton or over a bridge to reach you. Residential South Grafton is more ordinary suburban work: reasonable street widths, fewer of the huge overhanging street trees that make the older northern side difficult, and generally firm ground. The exceptions are the low-lying pockets nearer the river, where the same rule applies as everywhere on the flats — after a wet fortnight the surface can look trafficable and not be, and we would rather pick a dry day than put a truck through your driveway.
